Devlin double and stoppage-time goals lift Portsmouth past Swansea
Portsmouth scored twice in stoppage time to beat Swansea City 3-1 at Fratton Park on Tuesday, November 3, with Terry Devlin claiming two goals. Thomas Waddingham added the final strike after Swansea had levelled late in normal time, according to match reports from Sky Sports and Express FM.
Watch the highlights:
John Mousinho made four changes to the Portsmouth side that had drawn 0-0 at Burnley. Express FM reported that Odin Bailey made his first Championship start, with Devlin, Ebou Adams and Tyrese Shade also returning to the starting line-up. Adrian Segecic threatened early, while Shade forced Lawrence Vigouroux to concede a corner.
Devlin opened the scoring in the 36th minute after Segecic worked the ball in from the right. The move involved Bailey before the ball reached Devlin, who finished to put the hosts ahead. Express FM also reported that Marko Milovanovic later had a close-range effort disallowed for a foul on Jenson Seelt.
Swansea's equaliser arrived in the 85th minute. Regan Poole pulled Zan Vipotnik's shirt inside the penalty area, and Vipotnik converted the resulting spot-kick. The visitors then came close to taking all three points when Ross Stewart hit the crossbar in the 88th minute, Sky Sports reported.
Instead, Portsmouth regained the lead in the second minute of added time. Devlin collected the ball from Bailey's corner, turned and finished into the bottom corner. Waddingham then got behind Swansea's defence from a Nicolas Schmid ball and scored in the 98th minute, according to Express FM's account of the closing stages.
The win extended Portsmouth's unbeaten sequence to six matches and took them to 10th, with four victories during that run. Swansea missed the opportunity to move above Middlesbrough at the top of the Championship. Sky Sports reported that Boro remained first ahead of their match on Wednesday.
Mousinho praised his players' response after conceding the penalty, telling Sky Sports that Portsmouth had continued to look dangerous on the counterattack. Swansea manager Vitor Matos said his side needed to remain calmer and more focused in difficult moments, despite having recovered to 1-1 and believed they could win.
