Derbyshire collapse leaves Gloucestershire 108 runs ahead in Bristol

Ollie Price's career-best 6-45 brought Gloucestershire back into their County Championship Division Two match against Derbyshire before the hosts closed day three with a 108-run lead in Bristol. BBC Sport's account, supplied by the ECB Reporters' Network, said Derbyshire were dismissed for 278 before Gloucestershire reached 149-3 in their second innings.

Derbyshire resumed on 162-2 and initially strengthened their position through Matt Montgomery, who made 65. He struck seven fours and shared a 43-run third-wicket partnership with nightwatchman Jack Morley, but the innings changed sharply after Montgomery top-edged a short ball from Matt Taylor to Sai Kishore at deep fine leg.

From 204-3, Derbyshire slipped to 211-5 as Price removed Wayne Madsen and Martin Andersson in consecutive overs. Madsen edged the off-spinner to Cameron Bancroft at slip, while Andersson was bowled for a 10-ball duck after playing back to a delivery that straightened. Derbyshire eventually lost their final eight wickets for 74 runs.

Morley and Aneurin Donald carried the visitors to 253-5 at lunch, securing a batting bonus point and a 16-run advantage at that stage. After the interval, Kishore bowled Donald for 26 before Price had Brooke Guest caught at short square leg, surpassing his previous first-class best of 3-40 against Leicestershire in Bristol in 2023.

Price then removed Morley for a career-best 41, with Bancroft taking the catch at slip. He completed his first five-wicket haul by bowling Brett Randell with a quicker delivery, then added Ben Aitchison as his sixth victim when Tommy Boorman held a catch at short square leg. Derbyshire's 278 gave them a first-innings advantage of 41.

Gloucestershire lost Bancroft to Shoaib Bashir's first delivery before Price, promoted after his work with the ball, made 21. Joe Phillips and Miles Hammond added 69 for the third wicket. Phillips reached a patient half-century before Bashir dismissed him shortly before the close, while Hammond finished unbeaten on 46 alongside James Bracey.

The hosts ended on 149-3, with Bashir holding figures of 2-59. Gloucestershire therefore entered the final day 108 runs ahead with seven second-innings wickets remaining, while Derbyshire retained a route into the contest if their bowlers could prevent Hammond and Bracey from extending the lead in the morning.
