However, substitute Jerry Yates had other ideas, heading home from a corner in the 93rd minute to send the away supporters into raptures. The goal sparked wild celebrations among the Derby bench and playing squad.
Derby manager Paul Warne said: "The lads never gave up, even when QPR equalized. That's the character this group has shown all season. Jerry's been a brilliant impact player for us, and to score such a crucial goal speaks volumes about his mentality."
The victory means Derby now sit in third place with 78 points from 41 games, just two points behind second-placed side with five matches remaining. QPR remain in 12th place with 58 points.
