Dean Elgar Century Leaves Surrey 45 Runs Behind at Chelmsford

Dean Elgar's century placed Essex in a commanding position against Surrey at Chelmsford, where the visitors closed the second day on 51-4 in their second innings. Surrey remained 45 runs behind after Essex converted a first-innings deficit into a 96-run advantage in the County Championship Division One match.

BBC Sport reported that Elgar made 113 from 191 balls as Essex reached 279 in reply to Surrey's 183. The former South Africa captain, who has announced that he will retire at the end of the season, passed 19,000 first-class runs during an innings containing 14 fours and one six.

Elgar shared a 111-run partnership with Charlie Allison, who made 43, after Essex began the day on 10-1. The Essex Cricket match report said the pitch became more settled after difficult conditions on day one, allowing Elgar to build the innings before he was caught at short midwicket off Mahipal Lomror.

Surrey leg-spinner Rahul Chahar limited the damage with 6-80, his ninth five-wicket haul. Essex lost their final seven wickets for 61 runs after reaching 218-3, with Chahar dismissing Michael Pepper, Zaman Akhter, Simon Harmer, Jamie Porter and Sam Cook after first removing Allison. The collapse kept Essex's total to 279 and gave Surrey a route back into the contest.

That opening soon narrowed as Surrey's top order fell away for the second time in the match. Harmer removed Dom Sibley, caught at short leg, and trapped captain Rory Burns lbw while attempting a sweep. Sam Cook then held a return catch from Ollie Pope, before Shane Snater had Matthew Fisher caught in the slips from the final ball of the day.

Surrey finished on 51-4 with six wickets remaining, while Essex held four bonus points to Surrey's three. Both counties entered the match involved in the lower end of the Division One table after combining for six Championship titles over the previous decade. The immediate task for Surrey on day three is to erase the remaining deficit and prevent Essex from turning their advantage into a decisive result.
