De Zerbi Defends Tottenham Spending as Summer Outlay Nears £300m
Roberto De Zerbi has defended Tottenham's aggressive summer recruitment as the club's outlay moves toward £300m. The Spurs head coach says the rebuild was needed after two seasons spent close to the Premier League relegation places.

Roberto De Zerbi has defended Tottenham Hotspur's heavy summer spending as the club's transfer outlay approaches £300m. The Guardian reports that Spurs have undertaken their busiest overhaul in years after two successive seasons near the Premier League relegation places, including a final-day escape last season.

Watch the highlights:

Tottenham have signed Sandro Tonali for £92.5m, Mateus Fernandes for £85m and Jan Paul van Hecke for £52m, according to the Guardian. The report says Manchester City forwards Savinho and Omar Marmoush are also poised to join for £85m and £75m respectively, which would push the summer total beyond £300m. Those two prospective deals have not yet been described as completed.

The activity comes in Tottenham's first summer window since Daniel Levy stepped down as executive chair last September. De Zerbi took charge near the end of March on what the Guardian described as a rescue mission. The 47-year-old said he had discussed possible targets with the club before his appointment was confirmed and viewed this window as a crucial opportunity to change the team's direction.

De Zerbi argued that sustained competition at the highest level requires significant investment. He said Tottenham needed to change the mood and give the squad a boost after the previous two campaigns. He also suggested the scale of the rebuild could reduce the need for similarly extensive recruitment over a longer period, allowing the group to develop together.

The squad changes have also reached the leadership group. Micky van de Ven has been appointed club captain following Cristian Romero's departure for Atlético Madrid. Pedro Porro is vice-captain, while Ben Davies, James Maddison and Archie Gray are also part of the captaincy group. Van de Ven and Porro are both injured and will miss Saturday evening's match at Brentford.

Further attacking additions are expected as Tottenham try to build a team capable of challenging near the top of the Premier League and competing regularly in Europe. De Zerbi stopped short of guaranteeing an immediate title challenge, but said Spurs now have a squad equipped to play at any stadium. The extent to which the new arrivals settle together will shape whether this major investment delivers the change the club is seeking.
