De Zerbi Defends Tottenham's £300m Rebuild After Survival Scare
Tottenham head coach Roberto De Zerbi has defended the club's heavy summer spending as Spurs reshape a squad that narrowly avoided relegation last season. The Guardian reported that the club's transfer outlay is expected to pass £300m, with further attacking additions still anticipated before the window closes.
Watch the highlights:
The confirmed arrivals highlighted in the report include Sandro Tonali for £92.5m, Mateus Fernandes for £85m and Jan Paul van Hecke for £52m. Savinho and Omar Marmoush are also poised to move from Manchester City for reported fees of £85m and £75m respectively, although those prospective deals were not described as completed.
The rebuild follows two seasons in which Tottenham remained close to the Premier League relegation places. Their survival last season was secured only on the final day. It is also the club's first summer transfer window since Daniel Levy left his position as executive chair in September, marking a significant change in both leadership and recruitment strategy.
De Zerbi, 47, took charge at the end of March on what The Guardian described as a rescue mission. He said transfer targets had been discussed with the club before his appointment was confirmed and argued that major changes were needed to alter the atmosphere around a side that had come close to relegation.
The coach also rejected criticism of Tottenham's spending, noting that clubs seeking to compete at the highest level generally invest substantially in their squads. He said the intention is to build a team capable of challenging near the top of the Premier League and competing regularly in Europe, while acknowledging that such progress may not happen immediately.
There has been a change in the dressing-room hierarchy as well. Micky van de Ven has been appointed captain following Cristian Romero's departure to Atlético Madrid, but Van de Ven will miss Tottenham's visit to Brentford through injury. Vice-captain Pedro Porro is also injured, while Ben Davies, James Maddison and Archie Gray form the rest of De Zerbi's captaincy group.
