De Zerbi Issues Public Apology to Tottenham Fans Over Greenwood Controversy
New Spurs manager addresses backlash from supporters regarding his previous comments about Mason Greenwood during his time at Marseille.

Roberto de Zerbi has issued a heartfelt public apology to Tottenham Hotspur supporters following intense criticism over comments he made about Mason Greenwood during his tenure as Marseille manager. The Italian's appointment as the new Spurs head coach has faced opposition from several fan groups due to his previous statements about the controversial former Manchester United forward.

Speaking through the official Tottenham website, De Zerbi expressed regret for any offense caused by his November remarks about Greenwood, who he managed at the French club. The 46-year-old emphasized that he never intended to minimize the severity of violence against women or anyone else.

"I have never wanted to downplay the issue of violence against women, or violence against anyone more broadly," De Zerbi stated in his carefully worded apology. "I have always stood up for those that needed protecting and I've consistently fought and taken a stand to be on the side of those who are most at risk."

The controversy stems from comments De Zerbi made in November while defending his decision to work with Greenwood at Marseille. The former Manchester United player had faced serious charges including attempted rape, controlling and coercive behavior, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm in 2022, though these were subsequently dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service.

In his original comments, De Zerbi had described Greenwood as appearing to be "a good lad" who had "paid in a strong way" for what happened. He also suggested the player had found "the right environment" at Marseille and expressed sympathy for Greenwood's situation, stating he felt "sad for what happened in his life."

These remarks provoked significant backlash from Tottenham supporters, with fan organizations describing them as "unnecessary, ill-judged, and deeply offensive to a significant number of supporters." Many accused the Italian manager of downplaying serious allegations and portraying Greenwood as a victim rather than addressing the gravity of the situation.

De Zerbi acknowledged the personal nature of his sensitivity to such matters, revealing he has a daughter and has always been particularly conscious of these issues. "I'm sorry if I offended anyone's feelings with this subject matter," he added. "I have a daughter and I'm very sensitive to these things and I always have been."

The new Spurs manager expressed hope that supporters would eventually understand his character and recognize that his previous statements did not represent an intentional stance on the matter. "I hope that over time people will get to know me better and understand that at that moment, I didn't mean to take a stance," he explained.

De Zerbi emphasized his principles regarding personal integrity, stating: "Those of you who know me well, will know that I'm not the kind of person who makes compromises to win more games or win an extra title."

Tottenham turned to De Zerbi following the dismissal of interim head coach Igor Tudor on Sunday, with the club currently sitting precariously in 17th position in the Premier League table. The team finds itself just one point and one place above the relegation zone, making De Zerbi's appointment crucial for their survival hopes.

Greenwood's career trajectory since leaving Manchester United has seen him initially join Spanish side Getafe on loan before signing permanently with Marseille in July 2024 for a fee potentially worth £26.6 million. The 24-year-old has demonstrated his footballing ability by scoring 47 goals in 74 appearances across all competitions for the French club, including finishing as Ligue 1's joint top scorer last season with 21 goals alongside Paris Saint-Germain's Ousmane Dembele.

The charges against Greenwood were dropped in February 2023 due to "a combination of the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light," which meant there was "no realistic prospect of conviction" according to the Crown Prosecution Service.

De Zerbi now faces the challenge of winning over skeptical Tottenham supporters while focusing on the immediate task of improving the team's league position and avoiding relegation.
