David Silva clarifies Supreme Sha Tin comeback is for one league match
David Silva says his Supreme Sha Tin comeback covers one league match, not a full season. Any extension remains dependent on his condition and performance.

David Silva has clarified that his return to competitive football with Hong Kong Premier League club Supreme Sha Tin is intended to cover one league match, rather than a full season. The Guardian reported on October 14 that the former Manchester City and Spain midfielder was surprised by the wider interpretation of the club's announcement.

Watch the highlights:

The 40-year-old said coverage had given the impression he had signed for an entire campaign. His explanation narrowed the scope of the comeback announced the previous week: he would play a league fixture, but had committed to only one match. Supreme Sha Tin's original social-media message had described him joining training and preparing for his debut without spelling out that limitation.

The Standard's earlier reporting also described an initial one-match arrangement. It said the club would assess whether to extend it according to Silva's physical condition and performance. The club said he would not be rushed into action and would train with the squad until ready. That leaves any longer stay conditional, rather than an agreed part of his return.

Preparations extend beyond selecting a match. According to The Standard, club executive and player Jim Wong said supporters would be offered activities involving Silva, including access for fan-club members to watch training. The newspaper also reported that Supreme Sha Tin had appointed English coach Thomas Ballantyne after Kwok Kar-lok's departure and brought in several overseas players as part of changes to the squad.

Silva stopped playing in 2023 after an anterior cruciate ligament injury during pre-season with Real Sociedad. Before his three seasons in San Sebastian, he spent a decade at Manchester City, winning four Premier League titles, two FA Cups and five League Cups. His Spain career included 125 appearances, the 2010 World Cup and European Championship victories in 2008 and 2012.

The signing was announced on October 7, with EFE reporting that the club said Silva had passed medical tests. In the announcement video, he spoke about his enthusiasm for Hong Kong's culture, people and food as well as the football experience. His subsequent clarification establishes a much shorter playing commitment than a season-long return.
