Daniel Hughes among five more Sussex departures after 2026 season
Sussex have confirmed that Daniel Hughes is among five more players leaving after the 2026 season, BBC Sport reported. The Australian batter departs alongside Scotland left-arm seamer Brad Currie, batter Harrison Ward, spinner Troy Henry and seamer Nantes Oosthuizen, with the announcement covering players from both the county's batting and bowling ranks.
Watch the highlights:
Hughes, 37, finishes his Sussex spell after three seasons as an overseas player at Hove. According to the BBC, he was the club's highest run-scorer in the County Championship in 2026. His departure therefore includes the loss of the batter who led Sussex's scoring in that competition during the season just completed.
In comments reported by the BBC, Hughes described his time at Sussex as particularly enjoyable, both as a cricketer and away from the field. Director of cricket Paul Farbrace also highlighted his contribution to developing home-grown players, praising an influence that extended beyond Hughes' own runs and contributions to victories across formats.
Sussex's detailed departure announcement set out Hughes' record since arriving in 2024. He helped the club reach Blast Finals Day and win promotion to the Championship's Division One that year. His Sussex first-class tally finished just below 2,000 runs, averaging 43.13 with four centuries. This season's Blast included an unbeaten 108 from 52 balls against Middlesex.
Currie's spell began with a short-term deal in 2022 and figures of 6-93 against Middlesex at Lord's on his Championship debut. Sussex said an Achilles injury in this year's Blast opener limited him to one Sharks appearance in 2026. Ward, who joined in 2021 through the Oxfordshire development partnership, leaves with 1,199 T20 runs from 57 appearances.
The club also recorded five List A wickets in six matches for Henry, who spent two seasons at Sussex. Oosthuizen joined from Surrey's academy before the 2025 season and took three wickets in three One Day Cup appearances in 2026. Sussex's full departure list now contains ten names, also including Henry Crocombe, Fynn Hudson-Prentice, John Simpson, George Thomas and Tom Alsop.
