Daniel Dubois to Defend WBO Title Against Fabio Wardley in London Rematch

Daniel Dubois will defend his WBO heavyweight championship against Fabio Wardley in a rematch at the O2 Arena in London on October 17. BBC Sport reported that the fight was announced during the undercard of the IBF heavyweight title bout between Moses Itauma and Filip Hrgovic on Saturday, when Dubois and Wardley met in the ring for a face-off.

The second contest comes five months after Dubois stopped Wardley in the 11th round of their first meeting in Manchester. Wardley knocked Dubois down twice during the early rounds, but Dubois recovered and applied sustained pressure before the referee halted the fight. The victory made the 28-year-old Londoner a two-time world champion and transferred the WBO belt from Wardley to Dubois.

For Wardley, the stoppage was the first defeat of his professional career and came in his 22nd bout. The 31-year-old Ipswich fighter has 20 victories, including 19 by stoppage, alongside one loss and one draw. BBC Sport reported that Wardley expects to make adjustments for the return bout and sees the London venue as familiar territory.

Dubois enters the rematch with 23 professional wins, 22 of them by knockout, and three defeats. His career has included two separate reigns as a world champion. The first fight demonstrated the danger carried by both heavyweights, with Wardley producing the early knockdowns before Dubois reversed the momentum and forced the late stoppage.

The October fight also has potential consequences for the wider heavyweight division. BBC Sport reported that promoter Frank Warren has discussed a possible Wembley Stadium contest next summer involving the rematch winner and Itauma, provided Itauma wins a world title and completes any required defence against mandatory challenger Frank Sanchez. Those conditions mean that matchup remains only a possibility.

The division is currently split among several champions after Oleksandr Usyk vacated his titles. Dubois holds the WBO championship, Murat Gassiev holds the WBA belt and Agit Kabayel is the WBC champion. The confirmed O2 rematch gives Dubois an immediate chance to consolidate his latest title reign, while Wardley gets an opportunity to reverse the only loss on his record.
