Dan Neil double sends Rangers past Celtic into League Cup semi-finals

Rangers knocked Celtic out of the Scottish League Cup with a 3-0 victory at Ibrox on Sunday, September 13. Captain Dan Neil scored twice and Kevin Kelsy supplied the other goal as Derek McInnes won his first Old Firm match as Rangers manager, according to BBC Sport's match report.

Neil opened the scoring after a move involving Ryan Naderi and Kelsy. Naderi found the striker, who passed back for Neil to finish from outside the penalty area. Kelsy then scored his first Rangers goal, arriving at the far post and driving his effort in via the near post to double the lead.

An Emmanuel Fernandez effort was disallowed for offside, but Rangers subsequently added a third through their captain. Neil curled a shot into the top corner beyond Sam Johnstone, completing his double and extending the advantage. BBC Sport reported that Celtic struggled to respond to the hosts' approach throughout the contest.

FotMob's team sheets listed Rangers in a 4-4-1-1 formation, with Naderi behind Kelsy and Neil alongside Nicolas Raskin in midfield. Celtic started in a 4-3-3, with Johnstone in goal and Callum McGregor, Benjamin Nygren and Mika Baur forming the midfield. Kasper Hogh was joined in the forward line by Camilo Duran and Sebastian Tounekti.

The result extended Rangers' winning sequence to five matches. FotMob's results record shows they had beaten Aberdeen 1-0 and Falkirk 2-1 away before successive 1-0 home victories over Motherwell and St Mirren. Celtic also arrived after four consecutive wins, against Falkirk, Aberdeen, St Mirren and St Johnstone, but could not carry that run through the cup tie.

Rangers will meet Aberdeen in the semi-finals, BBC Sport reported. The immediate derby calendar gives Celtic an opportunity to respond in a different competition: the sides are scheduled to meet at Celtic Park in the league next Sunday. For Rangers, the cup victory adds a place in the last four to their improving recent results under McInnes.
