Dan Lawrence Fifty Puts England in Control Despite Lord's Rain

Dan Lawrence strengthened England’s position in the second Test against Pakistan with an unbeaten half-century during a rain-disrupted third day at Lord’s. BBC Sport reported that England closed on 177-7 in their second innings, a lead of 357 runs, after only 24.5 overs were possible on Saturday.

England resumed on 81-3 after making 290 in their first innings and dismissing Pakistan for 110. Lawrence reached 50 not out from 64 balls, recording his second half-century in as many Tests and the fifth of his Test career. His innings helped the hosts extend an already commanding advantage despite conditions that repeatedly favoured Pakistan’s seamers.

Play did not begin until 14:40 BST because of persistent rain and was interrupted several times before the players left the field for the final time at 17:08. The day was eventually abandoned at 18:30. The disrupted schedule made batting particularly difficult under cloud and floodlights, with movement through the air and off the pitch.

Muhammad Abbas removed Emilio Gay for 31 with a delivery that kept low, leaving England 89-4. Lawrence then added 45 for the fifth wicket with Harry Brook. Brook made 34 before wicketkeeper Muhammad Rizwan took a close catch off Abbas, who ended the day with second-innings figures of 3-48.

Lawrence initially absorbed pressure as Pakistan’s attack found consistent movement. After reaching 19 from 39 balls, he became more aggressive, hitting Mohammad Ali for a four and a six in successive deliveries. He later struck spinner Ali Usman for six and completed his half-century in the following over, shortly before the weather ended play after only two more balls.

Pakistan will require at least 358 to win once England’s innings is complete. BBC Sport noted that the tourists have scored 416 runs across their three completed innings in the series so far. England are seeking victory in the match and their first Test series win since 2024, with a better weather forecast expected to provide more playing time on Sunday.
