Dallaglio's World Cup medal sells for £54,000 as rugby collection raises £100,500
Lawrence Dallaglio's 2003 Rugby World Cup winner's medal has sold for £54,000 at auction, with items from the former England captain's collection raising £100,500 altogether. BBC Sport reported the results of the sale at Budds in Northamptonshire on Tuesday, October 13, after the 54-year-old offered memorabilia following his bankruptcy.
Watch the highlights:
The World Cup medal was listed as lot 90 in the auctioneer's catalogue, carrying an estimate of £50,000 to £80,000. Its reported sale price therefore fell within that range, close to the lower end. Budds included the collection in its Octoberfest auction, a sale advertised as featuring more than 300 lots of sporting memorabilia.
International caps also attracted buyers. According to BBC Sport, a British and Irish Lions cap fetched £11,000 and an England cap sold for £8,000, while Dallaglio's 2003 Six Nations winner's medal brought £7,500. All three prices exceeded their published catalogue estimates: £3,500 to £5,500 for the Lions cap and £3,000 to £5,000 each for the England cap and Six Nations medal.
The collection extended across several stages of Dallaglio's playing career. Budds listed his 1993 Rugby World Cup Sevens winner's medal, his 2007 World Cup runner-up medal and a training shirt from the Lions' 1997 tour of South Africa. Club honours in the catalogue included medals from domestic cup finals and European competitions, alongside individual awards. Those listings describe what was offered, rather than confirming that each item sold.
Not everything found a buyer. BBC Sport reported that medals from all four of Dallaglio's Premiership title wins with Wasps remained unsold, and put the estimated value of the overall collection at £180,000. The £100,500 raised consequently covered only the items that sold, rather than a completed sale of the entire collection.
The World Cup medal commemorates England's 20-17 extra-time victory over Australia in Sydney on November 22, 2003. In its pre-sale reporting, Planet Rugby described the silver-gilt medal as retaining its green and blue ribbon and original fitted case. Dallaglio earned 85 England caps and toured with the Lions three times, the outlet reported, underlining the international career represented in the auction.
