Dahmen encounters alligator during Zurich Classic water hazard shot
Joel Dahmen experienced an unforgettable moment during Thursday's opening round of the Zurich Classic of New Orleans when an alligator made an appearance during his approach shot near a water hazard. The incident occurred on the 17th hole at TPC Louisiana, where Dahmen faced a delicate shot from the ridge of a water feature. As he prepared to strike, a large alligator emerged from the water and positioned itself perfectly to observe the American's attempt. "I saw this big guy surface and I thought, 'Great, now I have an audience,'" Dahmen recounted with his characteristic humor. The alligator, estimated to be around eight feet long, appeared completely unfazed by the proceedings, simply floating near the water's edge as Dahmen composed himself. Despite the unusual distraction, Dahmen managed to execute his shot successfully, landing safely on the green. The moment quickly became a talking point among players and fans at the tournament, with social media users dubbing the encounter the "crocodile caper." Fellow professional and playing partner Chris Kirk joked that the alligator was likely evaluating Dahmen's technique. The Zurich Classic, which features a unique two-man team format, sees players tackle the challenging Louisiana layout that is known for its abundant wildlife and water features. Dahmen and his partner, who was also playing alongside him, couldn't help but laugh at the surreal situation. "That's definitely a first for me," Dahmen admitted. "I've played with snakes before, but never had an alligator as a spectator." The course's proximity to wetlands and natural water systems means such encounters are not uncommon, though tournament officials noted this was the most memorable wildlife interaction of the week so far. Dahmen finished the opening round strongly, carding a 5-under-par 67 alongside his teammate, putting them in contention heading into Friday's second round.
