Manchester United Complete Record-Breaking Signing of Brazilian Midfielder
Manchester United have completed the signing of Brazilian midfielder Thiago Santos from Santos FC in a deal worth £85 million, making him the most expensive January transfer in Premier League history.
The 22-year-old playmaker, who has been courted by Europe's elite clubs for the past two seasons, put pen to paper on a five-and-a-half-year contract at Old Trafford after passing his medical on Sunday. The transfer fee eclipses the previous January record of £75 million paid by Chelsea for Enzo Fernández in 2023.
Santos, who has earned 15 caps for Brazil's senior national team, is renowned for his exceptional passing range, technical ability, and leadership qualities despite his young age. The São Paulo native captained Santos to the Copa Libertadores final last year and was instrumental in Brazil's recent World Cup qualifying campaign.
"Signing for Manchester United is a dream come true," Santos said during his unveiling at Carrington Training Ground. "This club has a special history with Brazilian players, and I'm honored to follow in the footsteps of legends like Ronaldinho and Fabinho. I can't wait to contribute to bringing success back to Old Trafford."
United manager Erik ten Hag has been searching for a creative midfielder to unlock stubborn defenses, and Santos fits the profile perfectly. The Brazilian's ability to dictate tempo and create chances from deep positions addresses a key weakness in United's current setup.
"Thiago is exactly the type of player we needed to take the next step," ten Hag explained. "His vision, passing ability, and maturity beyond his years make him perfect for our system. He can play multiple positions in midfield and brings the technical quality we've been looking for."
The signing represents United's commitment to challenging for major honors this season, with the club currently sitting fourth in the Premier League table. Santos is expected to make his debut in next weekend's crucial fixture against Liverpool at Anfield, pending international clearance.
