Czech Republic defeat Ukraine to claim 12th Billie Jean King Cup title

The Czech Republic won the Billie Jean King Cup on Sunday, defeating Ukraine 2-0 in Shenzhen, China. BBC Sport reported that the victory gave the Czechs their 12th championship and ended an eight-year wait, with both singles matches settled in straight sets.

Karolina Muchova opened the final with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Anhelina Kalinina. Linda Noskova then beat Elina Svitolina 6-3, 7-6, taking the second-set tiebreak 7-5 to clinch the trophy. The result denied Ukraine a maiden title and completed the decisive singles work without the need for a doubles decider.

The Czechs remain second on the competition's all-time title list behind the United States, who have 18 championships, according to BBC Sport. Their previous triumph came in 2018. Sunday's outcome restored the team to the top of the event after that lengthy gap.

The partnership that delivered the final had also secured Friday's 2-0 semi-final win against Spain. The WTA reported that Muchova, who had not played in the quarter-final against Great Britain, returned to defeat Jessica Bouzas Maneiro 7-5, 6-4. She saved four of the five break points she faced in the opening set and converted two of her own three opportunities, establishing the lead in the tie. That opening set took an hour before Muchova moved through the second.

Captain Barbora Strycova then turned to Noskova for the second singles match against Cristina Bucsa. The Wimbledon champion won 7-6, 6-2, recovering from 4-2 down in the opening-set tiebreak before winning it 7-5. She also won the last eight points of the second set, the WTA reported, sending the Czechs into their first final since their previous title-winning campaign.

The Czech squad's options extended beyond its two final singles winners. The WTA listed Marie Bouzkova and Sara Bejlek as top-30 players in the team, alongside doubles world number one Katerina Siniakova. Muchova and Noskova nevertheless supplied the two victories required against Spain, then repeated that contribution against Ukraine to finish the tournament as champions.
