Cycling Sessions and Himalayan Salt Crystals: The Unconventional Methods Behind British Athletics Success
The husband-and-wife coaching team of Trevor Painter and Jenny Meadows have revolutionized middle-distance training through an innovative blend of traditional athletics preparation and unconventional methods that helped propel Keely Hodgkinson and Georgia Hunter Bell to world championship glory.
Their holistic approach encompasses everything from cycling sessions to Himalayan salt crystals, creating a training environment that prioritizes athlete happiness alongside physical performance in ways that challenge conventional coaching wisdom.
Painter revealed that Hodgkinson felt so strong warming up for her world indoor 800m final that she considered attempting another world record. Warming up she said: I feel amazing. I will not be surprised if I get a PB here, Painter recalled. I went: OK, your PB is a world record.
The performance vindicated months of meticulous preparation that emphasized injury prevention over maximum training stress, with Hodgkinson experiencing her first completely healthy championship preparation since Budapest 2023.
It is the first time since Budapest in 2023 where she has turned up to a championship 100% healthy, Painter explained. Even at the Paris Olympics she had a bit of a niggle and missed some of the winter. But this year she has not missed a session.
The coaching partnership benefits from Nike support that provides access to physiotherapist Alison Rose, who has successfully managed Hodgkinson hamstring problems, and physiologist Rachel McCormick, who previously worked at the Australian Institute of Sport.
McCormick scientific background initially concerned her about the athletes recovery patterns, as traditional endurance training research suggested they should require extended recovery periods between high-intensity sessions.
She is testing us and we are up in the 20s. And then she is like: Oh they are going to be screwed for like a week here. Then two days later we are up in 20s again and she is blown away by how we have worked like that and then come back and do it again, Painter noted.
One of their most significant innovations involves replacing traditional long slow running with alternative cardiovascular activities that reduce impact stress while maintaining aerobic benefits.
We have to have speed work, lactate work, threshold work and then long slow volume, so we do as much of the long slow stuff on bikes, in swimming pools, on cross trainers, or ellipticals, Painter explained.
Hodgkinson has embraced cycling so enthusiastically that one-hour sessions sometimes extend to 90 minutes, requiring coaches to moderate her enthusiasm to prevent overtraining.
We have had to rein her back, Meadows acknowledged. She finds it so boring on a static bike or the elliptical machine in the gym. If she wants to carry on in this sport for a decade or more, we have to let her enjoy life.
The psychological aspects of their coaching philosophy recognize the different personalities within their training group, with Hodgkinson representing a free spirit while Hunter Bell exhibits more analytical tendencies.
Keely is a free spirit. You have to keep things flexible for her, Meadows observed, contrasting this with Hunter Bell approach. Georgia is like me. I was a robot and I am very analytical. Georgia is exactly the same.
This personality-driven approach extends to unconventional elements like Hodgkinson belief in Himalayan salt crystals for calming effects, which the coaches support as part of their athlete-centered philosophy.
It is about making the human happy, Painter emphasized. If they are in a happy place they are going to perform well.
The dynamic between Hodgkinson and Hunter Bell creates mutually beneficial training partnerships despite their different strengths, with Hodgkinson possessing superior speed while Hunter Bell excels in speed endurance.
They are a dynamic duo, Meadows noted. They elevate each other, Painter added, emphasizing how their friendly competition drives improvement without damaging their personal relationship.
Painter programming expertise allows him to manage multiple athletes within single training sessions, customizing workouts for individual needs while maintaining group cohesion.
There can be seven different training sessions going on within the same session because everyone is so bespoke, Meadows explained. Keely needs a little bit more of this, Georgia needs that, somebody else needs something else.
The coaches predict even greater achievements ahead, particularly regarding potential assaults on outdoor world records, based on their athletes current form and continued development under their innovative system.
Their success validates coaching approaches that prioritize athlete wellbeing alongside performance metrics, creating sustainable training environments that could influence coaching practices throughout international athletics.
