Cullen’s Maiden Fifty Leads Worcestershire Recovery Against Northamptonshire

Henry Cullen’s maiden County Championship half-century rescued Worcestershire from a major collapse on the opening day against Northamptonshire at New Road. The hosts were bowled out for 200 before Northamptonshire reached 16 without loss from eight overs at the close, according to the ECB Reporters’ Network report published by BBC Sport.

Northamptonshire captain Luke Procter chose to bowl and finished with 5-63 as his promotion-chasing side collected three points. Ben Sanderson struck with the second ball of the match, trapping Dan Lategan lbw, before Procter bowled Rehaan Edavalath with his first delivery to leave Worcestershire 20-2.

Jake Libby and Adam Hose steadied the innings, taking the home side to lunch at 56-2. Libby reached his fourth Division Two half-century of the season but fell to Procter for 55. Procter then removed captain Brett D’Oliveira after the batter had been dropped at second slip, while Calvin Harrison dismissed Hose for 45 after play resumed.

The innings deteriorated rapidly from 103-2 to 150-9. Australian seamer Harry Conway, who returned 2-38, bowled Matthew Waite and later dismissed Ben Allison. Procter bowled Tom Taylor before taking Usama Mir’s wicket to complete his first five-wicket haul of the season.

Cullen then changed the shape of the innings with 64 in only his fifth County Championship appearance. Batting with last man Adam Finch, who finished unbeaten on five, the young wicketkeeper added 50 for the final wicket and lifted Worcestershire to a total that had looked unlikely during the collapse. Cullen’s contribution was also his first half-century in the competition.

Ricardo Vasconcelos and Procter survived the remaining eight overs for Northamptonshire. The visitors left the field after one over because of bad light but returned for seven more, closing without losing a wicket. Procter continued his prominent day by opening the innings alongside Vasconcelos after leading Northamptonshire’s bowling attack. Northamptonshire ended the day 184 runs behind Worcestershire, with all ten wickets intact heading into day two.
