Crocombe Hat-Trick Puts Sussex on Top Against Somerset

Henry Crocombe delivered a hat-trick and a five-wicket haul as Sussex took control of their County Championship Division One match against Somerset at Hove. According to a BBC Sport report supplied by the ECB Reporters' Network, Somerset were dismissed for 202 in 58 overs before Sussex reached 77-2 at the close of the opening day.

Crocombe finished with 5-56, only the second five-wicket return of his first-class career, while Sean Hunt took 3-31. Somerset's total was built around Tom Abell's 72 and Craig Overton's 54, whose sixth-wicket partnership added 95 after the visitors had struggled in seam-friendly conditions.

Somerset lost Tom Lammonby to the first ball of the second over when Jaydev Unadkat completed a juggling catch at long leg from Hunt's bowling. Crocombe then had Josh Thomas caught behind and bowled Henry Nicholls two deliveries later. Archie Vaughan fell for 20 at 59-4, leaving Somerset 93-4 at lunch, before James Rew became Hunt's third wicket soon after the interval.

Abell and Overton repaired the innings after Abell was dropped at first slip on 35. Their stand pushed Somerset into a stronger position, but Sussex broke it when part-time bowler Tom Clark removed Abell and captain Lewis Gregory with consecutive deliveries. Clark had Abell caught at wide first slip before Gregory returned a catch to the bowler from the next ball.

Crocombe then ended the innings in a rush. Overton was caught down the leg side, Migael Pretorius was held at third slip, and Jack Leach edged behind to complete the hat-trick. Somerset lost their final five wickets for 11 runs, and Crocombe's treble was Sussex's first in first-class cricket since Jason Lewry achieved the feat in 2001.

Sussex lost both openers in their reply but ended the day with eight wickets in hand, 125 runs behind. Tom Clark was unbeaten on 45, while Migael Pretorius had figures of 1-11 for Somerset. Sussex collected three points from the day and Somerset none, an early setback for a side pursuing its first County Championship title.
