Crocombe Hat-Trick and Fisher Six-Wicket Haul Shape Dramatic County Day

Henry Crocombe took his second hat-trick in successive matches for Sussex and Matt Fisher returned career-best figures for Surrey during a wicket-heavy second day in the County Championship. The Guardian reported that both bowlers claimed five-wicket hauls or better as the matches at Chelmsford and The Oval changed rapidly.

At Chelmsford, Essex collapsed from 171 for three to 177 all out, losing seven wickets for six runs in 26 balls. Crocombe removed Simon Harmer, Zaman Akhter and Shane Snater with consecutive deliveries to complete the hat-trick and finished with five wickets. It was his second hat-trick in two games.

Sussex had made 275 in their first innings before bowling Essex out, then reached 90 for four by stumps. That left Sussex 188 runs ahead at the close. The Guardian also reported that England withdrew Sam Cook from the match midway through the contest. Crocombe is due to move to The Oval at the end of the season.

The action at Crocombe's future home was just as dramatic. Yorkshire made 185 before dismissing Surrey for 83 in 30 overs, securing a first-innings lead of 102. Jack White took four wickets, Ben Coad three and George Hill two as Surrey's batting order was dismantled.

Fisher then led Surrey's response with a career-best six for 25 against his former county. Yorkshire were bowled out for 82 in their second innings, setting Surrey 185 to win. The home side reached 27 without loss by stumps and therefore required another 158 runs when play ended.

The Guardian's day-two report recorded 23 wickets falling at The Oval. It was the first time since 1950 that a single day of first-class cricket at the ground featured part of all four innings. Elsewhere in Division One, Sussex held the advantage over Essex, Warwickshire left Hampshire 74 for six in reply to 398, Nottinghamshire declared on 451 for eight against Leicestershire, and Somerset built a first-innings lead of 247 over Glamorgan.
