Cricket Australia Approves BBL Privatisation as Renegades Sale Begins

Cricket Australia has approved private investment in Big Bash League clubs, opening a new phase for the domestic Twenty20 competition. Australian Associated Press reported that the governing body has moved ahead despite opposition from New South Wales and Queensland, while Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia have supported the change.

The first transaction will focus on the Melbourne Renegades, with Cricket Victoria launching a process for prospective investors to express interest. The club is expected to operate in caretaker mode during the coming season before moving under new management for 2027-28. The Renegades are also set to be rebranded following the sale.

Cricket Australia chairman Mike Baird said the decision followed months of analysis, discussion and collaboration. According to the AAP report, he described private investment as a step intended to strengthen the long-term future of Australian cricket, reinforce the Big Bash and protect the country’s position in the global game.

Cricket Australia will continue to control international scheduling, player availability, the BBL salary cap and proposals involving club branding. That structure leaves the national governing body with authority over several central competition matters even as private owners are invited to invest in individual teams.

Cricket Victoria director Shaun Richardson said the Renegades sale would allow interested parties to explain why they were suitable owners. He also said funds unlocked by private investment could be reinvested across Victorian cricket, covering levels from grassroots participation to the elite game. Cricket Victoria will continue to manage the Melbourne Stars, although the AAP report said the Stars are also likely to be renamed after the Renegades transaction.

Other BBL clubs could be offered to investors later, but Cricket Australia will first assess how the Renegades sale proceeds. Private ownership may permit changes to club names and colours. The coming BBL season is scheduled to begin on December 12, when the Renegades face the Perth Scorchers in Chennai, before the planned ownership change takes effect the following season.
