Crawley’s Unbeaten 82 Gives Kent Control in Promotion Clash

Zak Crawley struck an unbeaten 82 as Kent took early control of their County Championship promotion contest against Northamptonshire at Wantage Road. BBC Sport, carrying a report from the ECB Reporters' Network, said Crawley's innings was his highest score of the season as Kent reached an unbroken opening partnership of 154 on a rain-shortened first day.

Crawley hit 12 fours and one six, while Ben Compton finished unbeaten on 51. The pair were asked to bat first and completed all 36 overs available after torrential morning rain delayed the start until 4:15 p.m. Their stand gave second-placed Kent the advantage against a Northamptonshire side that began the match four points behind them in third.

Northamptonshire created early pressure through Ben Sanderson, who found movement and repeatedly challenged Crawley's outside edge. Crawley survived a strong leg-before appeal on 16, while Compton received a reprieve on 17 when Nathan McSweeney dropped a low chance at fourth slip from Sanderson's bowling.

Crawley found his first boundaries against Liam Guthrie in the fourth over, driving through cover and punching from the back foot. He later drove Luke Procter through midwicket and helped take Kent to 50 in the 14th over. Leg-spinner Yuzi Chahal also beat him several times, but Crawley responded by advancing and hitting over midwicket.

The former England opener reached his half-century from 74 balls with a push into the off side. He then struck Chahal for six into the upper tier of the Spencer Pavilion and added three cover boundaries from Sanderson's second spell. Compton followed with his own fifty from 108 deliveries in the final over of the day.

Northamptonshire had further unsuccessful leg-before appeals against both batters late in the session, including one against Compton on 44 from Calvin Harrison. Compton remained in place alongside Crawley at the close, leaving Kent with all 10 wickets intact after making maximum use of the limited playing time in a match with direct implications for the two promotion contenders.
