Crawley and Northeast Put Kent on Top Against Middlesex
Zak Crawley made a season-best 81 and Sam Northeast scored 87 as Kent closed a rain-shortened first day on 299-6 against Middlesex. Toby Roland-Jones led the hosts’ response with three wickets.

Zak Crawley and Sam Northeast struck 80s as Kent reached 299-6 on a rain-shortened opening day against Middlesex in the County Championship at Merchant Taylors’ School. Crawley made 81 and Northeast scored 87, while former Middlesex captain Toby Roland-Jones finished with 3-70, according to a BBC Sport report supplied by the ECB Reporters’ Network.

Watch the highlights:

Kent lost Ben Compton for 13 in the 10th over when Tom Helm trapped him leg before wicket. Northeast then joined Crawley, and the pair rebuilt the innings with a 142-run partnership for the second wicket. Their stand placed Kent in control before Middlesex’s bowlers recovered later in the day.

Crawley reached his first County Championship half-century of the summer and hit eight fours on his way to 81. His innings ended when he drove at a wide delivery from Ryan Higgins and was caught at slip. Higgins was returning to action after two months out with a wrist injury.

Roland-Jones then led Middlesex’s fightback. Tawanda Muyeye edged him to Sam Robson at slip for 13, while captain Daniel Bell-Drummond was caught by wicketkeeper Joe Cracknell for eight. Northeast remained in place through that spell, reaching 50 before progressing toward a possible century.

Rain during the tea interval delayed play, and Northeast was dismissed leg before wicket by Roland-Jones shortly after the restart for 87. Helm bowled Chris Benjamin for 27, giving the seamer figures of 2-57. Ekansh Singh was also dropped at gully by Higgins before another interruption sent the players from the field.

Play resumed about 45 minutes later in evening sunshine, allowing Kent to move to 299-6 before stumps. Middlesex had not begun their first innings. The hosts collected two bonus points from the opening day, while Kent secured one, leaving the match set for its second day after weather reduced the available playing time.
