Coventry beat Newcastle 4-1 as Simms and Mfuni seal first home league win
Coventry moved out of the relegation zone with a 4-1 victory over Newcastle, with substitutes Ellis Simms and Stephen Mfuni scoring late.

Coventry City beat Newcastle United 4-1 on Monday to claim their first home Premier League victory of the season and leave the relegation zone. Sky Sports reported that the result delivered successive wins for Frank Lampard's team.

Watch the highlights:

Jack Rudoni put the hosts ahead with a sixth-minute penalty at the Coventry Building Society Arena. Newcastle's official match update confirmed that goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek had fouled Sidiki Cherif inside the area. Rudoni then sent Hornicek the wrong way from the spot, leaving the visitors chasing the match almost from the start of their first top-flight meeting with Coventry since January 2001.

Newcastle had an opportunity to equalise before the interval, but Bobby Thomas protected Coventry's advantage. The Premier League's live coverage described how Matias Fernandez-Pardo got beyond the defender and rounded Carl Rushworth, only for Thomas to recover and stop his attempt on the goal line. Coventry reached half-time 1-0 ahead after another attack ended with Lewis Hall intercepting Ephron Mason-Clark's ball across the area.

Cherif increased the lead in the 48th minute with a low shot from outside the penalty area, his first goal for Coventry, according to Sky Sports. Sven Botman replied from long range in the 70th minute, reducing the deficit to one goal with 20 minutes of normal time remaining.

Coventry's substitutes settled the contest. Ellis Simms scored in the 81st minute with a deflected effort before Stephen Mfuni added the fourth five minutes later. Sky Sports reported that Mfuni, the 18-year-old on loan from Manchester City, had scored his first senior goal. Newcastle could not turn Botman's strike into a comeback.

The win followed Coventry's 1-0 success at Nottingham Forest, a result confirmed in the club's pre-match team update. Their published league record before Monday showed one victory and four defeats from five matches, with just one goal scored. Four goals against Newcastle therefore represented a marked improvement in their attacking return. Coventry's fixture list has them travelling to Tottenham next, before home league matches against Fulham and Sunderland later in October.
