County Cricket Season Takes Shape as Veterans Lead the Way
County cricket's early season picture is coming into focus, and one theme is already clear: experience still matters. As the 2026 LV= Insurance County Championship unfolds, it is the older heads who have been making the difference at crucial moments for several sides.
Sussex sit atop Division One with two wins -- an achievement that would sound improbable on paper, given the circumstances surrounding the club this season. A 12-point deduction for off-field matters placed them at a structural disadvantage before a ball was bowled. Yet Ollie Robinson's side has found ways to win regardless, most recently pulling off a remarkable chase at Hove. Chasing 328 against Warwickshire after being eight down in their first innings and trailing by 137 runs, Sussex needed something special. Three recent signings delivered it: Daniel Hughes posted 83, Jack Leaning added 120, and Tom Price chimed in with 70 as the trio compiled an unbroken partnership of 144 to seal the win. The penalty points remain, but on the field this team is fighting.
At Taunton, Craig Overton produced one of the performances of the season so far. The Somerset captain found himself at the crease with his team in trouble at 114 for five, still trailing Essex's first-innings total. What followed was a career-best 141 from a man better known for his bowling, a knock that put Somerset in control and ultimately set up a comfortable victory. It was a response to critics who had questioned his leadership after a slow start to the campaign. Overton's 216-run contribution with the bat more than answered those concerns.
At Headingley, Hampshire bounced back from a heavy defeat by dismantling Yorkshire in convincing fashion. The star of the show was Sonny Baker, whose raw pace proved too much for a Yorkshire lineup already depleted by illness. Baker needed just one over to remove Sam Whiteman, disturb the stumps of nightwatchman Ben Coad, and then dismiss James Wharton -- four wickets for 45 runs in total. At the other end, 39-year-old Kyle Abbott continued his relentless march toward milestone figures, closing in on a 10-wicket haul. Abbott has taken over 720 career wickets at a cost of under 21 runs each -- remarkable longevity for a seamer operating deep into his thirties.
Over in Division Two, Lancashire continued their surprisingly strong start with a win over Derbyshire at Old Trafford. James Anderson was instrumental, closing out the match with a spell of 9.5 overs, 3 for 18, to help bundle Derbyshire out for 30 runs short of their target. Marcus Harris had earlier laid the platform with 125 and 66 in both innings. Lancashire sit second in the division -- not where pessimistic fans expected them to be, but exactly where they are.
Nottinghamshire, the reigning champions, also returned to winning ways, beating Glamorgan thanks to centuries from Jack Haynes and Joe Clark. Captain Haseeb Hameed had a strange match -- dismissed first ball in each innings -- but his bowlers did the rest.
The season is still finding its shape. But the early evidence suggests that when the experienced heads deliver, the results follow.
