Costa Caps Sensational Return With Devastating Head Kick KO at UFC 327
The Brazilian middleweight veteran showed he still has plenty of pop in his legs, finishing Azamat Murzakanov in spectacular fashion in round three.

MIAMI — Paulo Costa reminded the MMA world exactly why he once ruled the middleweight division, delivering a vintage performance that ended with a thunderous head kick knockout at UFC 327 on Saturday night.

The Brazilian returned to light heavyweight and made an immediate statement, dismantling previously undefeated Russian Azamat Murzakanov with a highlight-reel finish at the 1:23 mark of the third round at Kaseya Center.

Costa fought at 205 pounds for the first time in years, and the decision clearly agreed with him. He looked massive and powerful from the opening bell, showcasing the kind of devastating striking that made him one of the most feared finishers in the sport.

The finishing sequence started with Costa continuing his methodical attack. He had been piling up damage with leg kicks throughout the fight, chopping away at Murzakanov's base before targeting the body. Then came the right hand that cracked the Russian square on the jaw. Costa simply smiled at his opponent, a chilling sight that signaled more punishment was incoming.

But nothing prepared fans for what came next. Costa uncorked a massive head kick that caught Murzakanov clean, sending him crashing to the canvas. The Russian tried to rise but his body gave out, and referee Marc Goddard rushed in to stop the contest.

Put some respect on my name! Costa declared afterward, still basking in the glow of his biggest win in years. The Brazilian credited matchmaker Mick Maynard for getting the fight done on just one day's notice.

I want to fight the best in the world. That's why I'm here. I asked Mick Maynard for this fight and he said yes. I'm going to try.

Murzakanov came into the bout with a perfect 14-0 record, but Costa proved far too experienced and powerful. The Russian showed moments of his own offense, connecting with a left hand that had finished numerous opponents in the past, but it wasn't enough to derail Costa's methodical assault.

Looking ahead, Costa said he remains flexible about his weight class, though he admitted light heavyweight allows him to perform at his best.

I can make 185 any time. But fighting at light heavyweight, I can prove I have skills enough and perform every well. I want to bring great performances. It doesn't matter the weight, it doesn't matter who.

With this victory, Costa has firmly reinserted himself into the light heavyweight title conversation.
