Conor Coady Joins Liverpool Under-21 Setup While Seeking New Club

Conor Coady is working with Liverpool's under-21 squad after leaving Wrexham, using the opportunity to maintain his fitness and gain coaching experience while he searches for another club. BBC Sport reported that the 33-year-old defender returned to the youth system where he began his career following the mutual termination of his Wrexham contract on the eve of transfer deadline day.

Coady told BBC Radio 5 Live Sport that Liverpool had allowed him to spend time with the under-21 group. He is observing coaches Jay Spearing and Rob Page as they prepare training sessions and helping with the players. When the squad needs an extra participant, Coady can also join training, giving him a way to remain ready for a possible playing opportunity.

The former England international remains a free agent and is discussing potential options with his representative. He indicated that he was not rushing the decision because he wants his next club to be the right fit. His work at Liverpool therefore provides a temporary professional base, but the BBC report did not say that he had signed a playing or coaching contract with the club.

Coady's spell at Wrexham ended after limited first-team involvement. He made six appearances following his move from Leicester City last summer, then joined Charlton Athletic on loan midway through the 2025-26 season. He played 12 times for Charlton before returning to Wrexham, but was not selected in any of the matchday squads for the Welsh club's first four games of the new campaign.

Coady said he appreciated Wrexham's help in reaching an agreement to end the contract early. In explaining his decision, he said he wanted to be a driving force both on and off the pitch and felt he had not been able to fill that role at the Racecourse Ground. Leaving the deal gave him the chance to step back and assess what kind of opportunity should come next.

Liverpool's arrangement keeps Coady involved in daily football without resolving his longer-term future. For now, he is combining practical coaching exposure with training as he weighs his next move. Any return to senior competition will depend on finding a club and role that meet the criteria he described, with no destination or timetable confirmed in the BBC's reporting.
