Conor Benn Calls Ryan Garcia "Good for Boxing" Despite Being "A Liability"
British welterweight contender offers candid assessment of controversial American champion ahead of his own return to the ring.

Conor Benn has delivered a frank assessment of WBC welterweight champion Ryan Garcia, describing the controversial American as both beneficial for boxing and simultaneously a significant liability to the sport.

Speaking ahead of his upcoming bout against Regis Prograis this Saturday, Benn offered his unfiltered thoughts on one of boxing's most polarizing figures. The British fighter acknowledged Garcia's value to the sport while expressing concerns about his unpredictable behavior outside the ring.

"Garcia is good for boxing, but he's also a liability," Benn stated candidly. "You don't know who's turning up – you don't know if Garcia's turning up. You don't know if he's going to make the fight or not, have some sort of episode. You just don't know."

Despite his reservations, Benn expressed admiration for Garcia's authenticity in a sport often criticized for manufactured personalities. The British fighter praised Garcia for remaining true to himself, even when facing criticism.

"People don't want to be themselves in the sport of boxing, so I love it when I see a young man under fire for being who he is," Benn explained. "At least you're true to yourself and who you are. Whether I like you or not – I don't like him – but some people do, just be who you are."

Benn's comments come as he prepares for his first fight since leaving longtime promoter Matchroom Boxing earlier this year. The 27-year-old has signed a one-fight deal with Zuffa Boxing, the promotional company backed by UFC president Dana White and Saudi Arabian capital.

This partnership represents a significant shift in Benn's career trajectory and potentially the broader boxing landscape. Zuffa Boxing's ultimate goal is to challenge the traditional sanctioning bodies – the WBO, WBC, IBF, and WBA – and establish their championship as the premier world title alongside the Ring Magazine belt.

For Benn, the move offers a fresh start as he continues pursuing his dream of winning a world championship, following in the footsteps of his father, Nigel Benn, who captured titles in the 1990s. The son of "The Dark Destroyer" has multiple pathways to world title contention depending on his performance against Prograis.

Current welterweight landscape offers several opportunities for Benn. Rolando Romero holds the WBA title, Lewis Crocker possesses the IBF belt, and Devin Haney reigns as WBO champion. However, Garcia remains Benn's preferred opponent despite their apparent mutual dislike.

The British fighter's desire to face Garcia stems partly from the American's unpredictability, which Benn views as both fascinating and frustrating. Garcia's erratic behavior and social media controversies have made him one of boxing's most discussed figures, generating significant attention and pay-per-view interest.

Benn's assessment reflects broader industry sentiment regarding Garcia. While the American's talent is undeniable – he holds impressive victories over established names – his reliability and professionalism remain questioned by peers and promoters alike.

The contrast between the two fighters couldn't be starker. Benn represents traditional British boxing values – discipline, dedication, and professional conduct – while Garcia embodies a more modern, social media-driven approach that prioritizes personality over convention.

As Benn prepares for his Zuffa Boxing debut against Prograis, his comments about Garcia highlight the complex dynamics within modern professional boxing. The sport continues balancing entertainment value with athletic credibility, often struggling to manage personalities that generate buzz while potentially damaging boxing's reputation.

Whether Benn and Garcia eventually meet in the ring remains uncertain, but their contrasting philosophies and mutual animosity would undoubtedly create significant interest among boxing fans worldwide.
