Compton's 126 puts Kent in control of promotion bid against Gloucestershire

Ben Compton scored 126 as Kent strengthened their push for promotion on the second day of their County Championship match against Gloucestershire at Canterbury. Kent made 353 to establish a first-innings lead of 124, before the visitors reached stumps on 61-2, still 63 behind. According to the ECB Reporters' Network report published by BBC Sport, a Kent victory would guarantee promotion from Division Two.

Compton's innings followed six successive innings in which he had not reached double figures. He brought up his century by clipping Langridge for four and remained the central figure in Kent's batting effort until he was caught behind off Matt Taylor shortly before the scheduled tea interval. By the time he departed, Kent's advantage had grown to 97 runs.

The hosts had begun the day on 71-1, but their progress was interrupted immediately. Sam Northeast fell to the first delivery, sending a leading edge off Langridge to gully, and Tawanda Muyeye was subsequently trapped lbw for 11. Compton also edged Che Simmons behind, only to survive because the delivery was a no-ball, an important reprieve during Kent's recovery.

Daniel Bell-Drummond contributed 55 after Ollie Price dropped him at second slip off Sai Kishore. Kent reached lunch on 183-3 before Kishore removed Bell-Drummond, with Joe Phillips taking the catch. Chris Benjamin then drove Taylor to take Kent ahead of Gloucestershire's first-innings 229, although Kishore soon bowled him with a sharply turning delivery.

Ekansh Singh added 31 before Daaryoush Ahmed dismissed him with the help of a diving catch from stand-in wicketkeeper Miles Hammond. Ahmed also removed Matt Milnes for five, while Simmons took the final two wickets, dismissing Matt Quinn for 12 and Khaled Ahmed without scoring. Compton and Bell-Drummond finished as Kent's two leading scorers in the innings.

Gloucestershire were left with 22 overs to negotiate, and Milnes struck with their first ball when Muyeye caught Phillips. He then bowled Price for nine, leaving the visitors at 13-2. Tom Boorman and Hammond prevented any further wickets before the close, finishing unbeaten on 11 and 33 respectively. Their recovery left Gloucestershire with eight wickets available, while Kent remained ahead with the promotion-clinching victory still to be secured.
