Competitor Dies After Manx Grand Prix Qualifying Crash
A competitor has died after a two-rider crash during qualifying for the 2026 Manx Grand Prix on the Isle of Man, race organisers have confirmed. The riders had not been publicly named when the BBC reported the incident on Tuesday evening.
Watch the highlights:
The crash happened at Cruickshanks in Ramsey on the opening lap of Tuesday evening's qualifying session. According to the BBC, officials stopped the session with a red flag at about 18:50 BST. The road between Ramsey Bus Station and Lheaney Road remained closed for more than three hours afterward.
Organisers said the second competitor involved suffered minor injuries and was receiving treatment at Noble's Hospital, the island's main hospital. They confirmed that one competitor sustained fatal injuries and said a multi-agency investigation had begun under the event's standard procedures. No further details about the cause or circumstances of the collision were announced.
The organisers extended their sympathies to the competitors and to the family and friends of those involved. They also said the affected families had asked for privacy. The available statement did not identify either rider, and the BBC report did not provide additional medical information about the injured competitor.
Tuesday was the second day of qualifying for this year's Manx Grand Prix and Classic TT. Monday's planned sessions had been cancelled because of rain showers, the BBC reported. Sunday's opening session was also shortened following a separate red-flag incident in which Italian rider Salvatore Sallustro was taken to hospital for treatment, as well as a later deterioration in the weather.
The Manx Grand Prix is held alongside the Classic TT on the 37.7-mile, or 61-kilometre, Mountain Course. Qualifying had been scheduled to continue each day through Saturday, with racing in the two events due to run until August 28. Organisers had not announced in the BBC report how Tuesday's fatal crash would affect the remaining programme, leaving any further operational decisions to be confirmed by the event.
