Commanders Target Elite Athletic Prospect Konga as Payne's Potential Successor
Washington has met with Louisville defensive tackle Rene Konga, whose freakish athletic testing numbers could make him an ideal fit for their defensive scheme as Daron Payne enters his contract year.

The Washington Commanders are exploring their options for the future of their defensive line, with reports indicating they have shown significant interest in Louisville defensive tackle Rene Konga as they prepare for life after Daron Payne.

Payne, the 2018 first-round pick, enters the final year of his current contract in 2026, and Washington has all but ruled out an extension this offseason. The team prioritized left tackle Laremy Tunsil for their major contract extension, which has since been completed at record-setting numbers.

According to The Athletic's Nicki Jhabvala, the Commanders recently arranged a meeting between Konga and their defensive line coaching staff, including Eric Henderson and Darryl Tapp. The face-to-face evaluation suggests Washington views the 6-foot-3, 299-pound Canadian as a legitimate prospect worthy of serious consideration.

Konga's journey to NFL consideration has been unconventional but impressive. Born to a Slovak mother and Nigerian father, he spent four seasons developing his skills at Rutgers before transferring to Louisville for the 2024 season. His final collegiate campaign proved transformative, earning him second-team All-ACC honors.

The defensive tackle's overall college statistics reflect consistent production across 44 career games, recording 63 tackles, including 11 for loss and five sacks. His two-season stint at Louisville showcased his reliability, appearing in 23 games while making significant contributions to the Cardinals' defensive success.

However, it's Konga's exceptional athletic testing that has captured the attention of NFL scouts and general managers. His combine-equivalent numbers are nothing short of remarkable for a player of his size and position, with measurables that would have placed him at or near the top of every testing category at this year's NFL combine.

Those athletic indicators align perfectly with Washington general manager Adam Peters' known preference for players who excel in the Relative Athletic Score (RAS) metric. Several of the Commanders' recent free agent signings have featured high RAS scores, indicating the organization's commitment to acquiring supremely athletic players.

The timing of Washington's interest makes strategic sense given their current roster construction. While they appear deep on paper with Payne, Javon Kinlaw, Tim Settle, Jer'Zhan Newton, and Ricky Barber under contract, Payne's uncertain future creates potential roster instability.

Additionally, the implementation of a new defensive scheme could make Konga's particular skill set especially valuable. His combination of size, athleticism, and versatility might prove ideal for the tactical adjustments Washington plans to implement.

With the No. 7 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, the Commanders have multiple strategic options. While no defensive tackle is projected to be selected within the top 10, Washington could trade down to acquire additional picks while still targeting their preferred interior defender at a more appropriate draft position.

The Commanders aren't the only organization showing interest in Konga's services. The Dallas Cowboys have reportedly scheduled him for a top-30 visit, indicating multiple teams recognize his potential impact at the professional level.

Konga's stock received another boost following his impressive performance at Louisville's pro day this week, where his athletic testing confirmed the exceptional numbers that have generated such widespread interest.

For Washington, the evaluation process represents prudent long-term planning rather than immediate need. Payne has historically performed at his best during contract years, suggesting 2026 could be another productive season for the veteran defender.

However, the Commanders' previous reluctance to extend Payne, despite his consistent production, indicates they may be prepared to move forward without him after this season. Identifying and developing his potential replacement becomes crucial for maintaining defensive line depth and effectiveness.

The meeting with Konga also reflects the Commanders' comprehensive approach to roster building under Peters' leadership. Rather than addressing needs reactively, the organization appears committed to identifying talent early and building sustainable depth at every position.

As the draft approaches, Washington's interest in Konga will likely intensify, particularly if other teams begin pursuing him aggressively. His unique combination of athletic ability and production could make him an attractive option for a Commanders team seeking to balance present competitiveness with future sustainability.
