Commanders Face Critical Decision: Delane or Downs at No. 7?
Washington must choose between LSU cornerback Mansoor Delane and Ohio State safety Caleb Downs in upcoming NFL Draft.

With the seventh overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft approaching, the Washington Commanders find themselves at a crossroads that could define their defensive future. The choice has crystallized into a debate between two standout defensive backs: LSU cornerback Mansoor Delane and Ohio State safety Caleb Downs.

Team 980 radio host Chris Russell sparked the discussion during Wednesday's show, examining which position represents the greater need for Washington's current roster construction. Both players are considered premier talents at their respective positions, with Delane projected as the first cornerback selected and Downs as the top safety in this year's class.

Downs has earned widespread praise for his leadership qualities and football intelligence during his time with the Buckeyes. Scouts consistently highlight his communication skills, hard hitting ability, and high football IQ as standout attributes. However, Russell raised questions about whether Downs benefited from playing behind exceptional talent on Ohio State's loaded defense.

"Leader, smart, high IQ, great hitter, great communicator is what so many see in the Ohio State safety," Russell noted. "But is Downs perhaps a product of all of that great talent that was in front of him for the Buckeyes?"

The concern stems from Ohio State's defensive depth, where Downs played alongside potential top-10 draft picks including Arvell Reese and Sonny Styles. Russell questioned whether this supporting cast masked any deficiencies in Downs' individual play, suggesting the safety may have had fewer challenging situations to navigate.

Meanwhile, Delane has demonstrated remarkable versatility at LSU, showcasing the ability to excel in multiple roles within the same game. Film study revealed the Tigers cornerback lining up at left corner, right corner, and in the slot, displaying the positional flexibility that modern NFL defenses covet.

Russell's analysis included examination of Delane's performance against elite competition, specifically reviewing tape from LSU's matchup with Alabama. In that contest, Delane faced off against Ty Simpson, another potential first-round quarterback, and Alabama's talented receiving corps in man-to-man coverage situations.

"Everything he thought he knew about Delane checked out," Russell reported after studying the film. The cornerback's ability to handle top-tier SEC competition while maintaining coverage responsibilities across multiple positions impressed evaluators.

From a positional need perspective, Russell argued that cornerback represents a more pressing concern for Washington's defensive scheme than safety. The Commanders have been seeking reliable coverage options to match up against the increasingly sophisticated passing attacks throughout the NFC.

However, Russell was careful to emphasize his respect for both prospects while stating his preference. "I am not saying Caleb Downs is not good. Caleb Downs is an outstanding football player," he clarified. "I like Mansoor Delane better."

The evaluation process falls ultimately to general manager Adam Peters, who will make the final determination on April 23rd. Both players offer distinct skill sets and could contribute immediately to Washington's defense, making this one of the more intriguing positional debates heading into draft day.

With neither player expected to last beyond the first round, the Commanders' decision at seventh overall could reshape their defensive identity for years to come.
