Draft Day Dilemma: Commanders Face Tough Call at Seventh Overall Pick
The Washington Commanders are heading into the 2026 NFL Draft with the seventh overall pick, and according to analysts, they are facing one of the toughest decisions of the opening round. With six names already called before their turn arrives, the Commanders war room will be weighing two exceptional talents who could shape the franchise is future for years to come.
Fernando Mendoza went first to the Las Vegas Raiders, followed by Sonny Styles landing with the New York Jets. David Bailey slipped to Arizona at number three, with Arvell Reese joining the Tennessee Titans and Mansoor Delane heading to the New York Giants. The Cleveland Browns rounded out the top six by selecting Carnell Tate.
That sequence leaves the Commanders with a choice that former NFL player and current analyst Logan Paulsen believes will define their draft. Appearing on the Take Command podcast alongside co-host Grant Paulsen, Logan walked through a draft simulator scenario that set the stage for Washington is selection.
The two names generating the most discussion are Ohio State safety Caleb Downs and Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love. Downs arrives with a reputation built on exceptional film study and instincts, while Love offers a different kind of dynamism that could change how the Commanders offense operates.
I do not think you could go wrong here, but man, is this a tough decision, Paulsen said. If you talk about a running back that can hit home runs, that can be dynamic in the pass game, that can be a third down weapon, man, that is really enticing, and I think it adds a little juice to this group.
The Downs evaluation comes with a caveat. Paulsen noted that Downs put together some of the best tape he has reviewed from a college safety, but the transition to the NFL raises legitimate questions about his physical profile. NFL opponents are bigger, faster, and more explosive than anything he faced in college. The concern is not talent, it is whether his frame will allow him to maintain that level of play against weekly elite competition.
On the other side, Love offers a tantalizing combination of speed and versatility that Paulsen sees as a potential game-changer for a Washington offense looking to take a step forward. The ability to contribute in the running game, the passing game, and on third downs makes him a plug-and-play weapon at the NFL level.
The Commanders also explored the possibility of trading down in the scenario, a move that could add additional draft capital if the right partner emerges. Whether they stay at seven or move back, the consensus is that this pick carries significant weight for a franchise still building its identity under new leadership.
The draft is approaching, and the decision in Washington will be among the most scrutinized of the opening night.
