Collins on bouncing back as MK Dons promotion nears after three setbacks
Milton Keynes Dons striker Ellis Collins has revealed how he overcame three career setbacks to become a key figure in his team's push for automatic promotion to the Championship, describing the journey as a test of character that has made him stronger.
Watch the highlights:
The 24-year-old forward, who has scored 18 league goals this season, suffered serious knee injuries in 2022 and 2023 that threatened to end his professional career before it had properly begun.
"There were times I wondered if I'd ever play again," Collins admitted. "The lowest point was being told I'd need a third operation. Three strikes and you're not out - that's what I kept telling myself."
MK Dons currently sit third in League One, four points behind leaders Port Vale with five games remaining. Collins' resurgence has been central to their impressive campaign, with his partnership alongside creative midfielder David Tamburello causing problems for opposing defenses week in, week out.
Manager Giles Harrison praised his striker's mental resilience during a difficult period. "Ellis could have easily given up when things got tough, but he showed incredible determination to get back to this level," Harrison said. "What he's achieved this season is a testament to his work ethic and self-belief."
Collins revealed a strict rehabilitation programme involving early morning gym sessions and modified training loads helped him rebuild both his body and confidence. "I had to relearn how to trust my knee again," he explained. "Now every time I score, it feels like proof that the hard work was worth it."
With a potential promotion party beckoning, Collins remains focused on the job ahead. "We've earned the right to be in this position, but nothing is won yet. We go again on Saturday against Cambridge," he concluded.
