Coleraine reclaim top spot with five-goal win at Crusaders
Coleraine returned to the top of the Irish Premiership with a 5-0 victory over Crusaders at Seaview on Saturday, October 24. BBC Sport NI reported that the result moved Ruaidhri Higgins' side two points ahead of Linfield and extended their perfect away league record this season to seven wins from seven matches.
Watch the highlights:
Crusaders had to play most of the match with 10 men after Scot Rough was dismissed in the 11th minute for a challenge on Ben Wylie. Wylie subsequently opened the scoring, before Senan Devine struck from distance and captain Joel Cooper completed another passing move to give the visitors a 3-0 half-time advantage.
The goals continued after the interval. According to Love Belfast's match report, Jacob Blaney turned Finn Tonks' corner into his own net seven minutes into the second half. Substitute Adam Brooks then completed the scoring in the 86th minute, finishing from close range after Lewis McGregor's work down the left. It was Brooks' first goal for Coleraine, scored against his former club.
In an interview published on Coleraine's website, Higgins praised how his players handled the severe weather and maintained their approach throughout the game. He acknowledged the early red card but also highlighted their application, the quality of their goals and the clean sheet. The victory was Coleraine's fourth successive league win, following their defeat by Linfield at the end of September.
Higgins reserved particular praise for Devine, whose 25-yard finish was his fourth goal of the campaign. The manager described the 19-year-old as a midfielder capable of threatening opponents with his left foot and finding space in their defence. He also commended Wylie's contribution and Brooks' movement inside the penalty area, while crediting McGregor's delivery for the final goal.
BBC Sport NI's report put Coleraine's league scoring total at 31 goals from 13 matches, with 12 conceded and only five points dropped. The win was their largest of the season. Their next two league opponents are Glentoran and Linfield, but they enter that sequence having restored their place at the summit with another away victory.
