Coleraine reclaim top spot with 5-0 win over Crusaders
Coleraine returned to the top of the Irish Premiership with a 5-0 victory at Crusaders on Saturday, moving two points ahead of Linfield. BBC Sport NI reported that the result was Coleraine's biggest win of the season and their fourth successive league victory since losing to Linfield in September.
Watch the highlights:
The match changed in the 11th minute when Crusaders defender Scot Rough was dismissed for a challenge on Ben Wylie. According to Love Belfast's match report, goalkeeper Shea Callister had already saved an effort from Wylie shortly before the sending-off. Coleraine subsequently took the lead when Senan Devine released Wylie to finish into the bottom corner.
Devine added the second with a long-range shot into the top corner, before captain Joel Cooper made it 3-0 ahead of half-time. Love Belfast reported that Matthew Shevlin laid the ball back to Ben Doherty, whose delivery was met by Cooper for a first-time finish. The visitors therefore had a three-goal cushion before the interval.
Jacob Blaney's own goal from a Finn Tonks corner increased Coleraine's advantage after the restart. Substitute Adam Brooks, formerly of Crusaders, completed the scoring late on with his first goal for Coleraine. Lewis McGregor supplied the opportunity from the left, allowing Brooks to finish from close range after he had earlier headed a chance over.
Coleraine manager Ruaidhri Higgins acknowledged to BBC Sportsound that the early dismissal had helped his side, while praising the quality of their goals. He also highlighted his players' application in strong wind and rain. Second-half substitutions allowed Higgins to use more of his squad, with Brooks, Lyndon Kane and Joe Thomson among those introduced.
BBC Sport NI noted that Coleraine have now won all seven of their away league matches this season. They have dropped only five points across 13 league games, scoring 31 goals and conceding 12. Their next two league opponents are Glentoran and Linfield, with the latter fixture scheduled for 7 November, giving the leaders further tests after this emphatic away result.
