Coleraine reclaim Irish Premiership lead with 5-0 win at Crusaders
Coleraine returned to the top of the Irish Premiership with a 5-0 victory over 10-man Crusaders at Seaview on Saturday. BBC Sport reported that the Bannsiders moved two points clear of Linfield after their biggest win of the season, maintaining a perfect away league record with seven victories from seven matches.
Watch the highlights:
Crusaders were reduced to 10 men when Scot Rough was sent off in the 11th minute for a challenge on Ben Wylie. Wylie subsequently opened the scoring, Senan Devine struck from distance and captain Joel Cooper completed a team move to make it 3-0 before half-time. Jacob Blaney's own goal and a late finish from substitute Adam Brooks completed the scoring.
The result was Coleraine's fourth consecutive league victory since losing to Linfield at the end of September. According to BBC Sport, they have dropped only five points across their opening 13 fixtures, scoring 31 goals and conceding 12. Saturday's clean sheet and five-goal margin added to a strong start by the reigning Irish Cup holders.
In an interview published on Coleraine's official website, manager Ruaidhri Higgins praised his players for handling difficult wind and rain while continuing to create well-worked goals. He acknowledged the early dismissal but emphasised the team's application throughout the match. Higgins was also pleased that his side prevented Crusaders from scoring despite the challenging conditions.
Devine's strike was his fourth goal of the campaign, the club reported, with the 19-year-old finding the top corner from 25 yards. Higgins highlighted the midfielder's left foot and ability to find spaces in the opposition, praising his first-half contribution. Wylie also drew praise from the manager for his performance and the quality of his finish.
Brooks' goal was his first for Coleraine against his former club, BBC Sport reported. Higgins welcomed the breakthrough and praised the striker's movement inside the penalty area, while crediting Lewis McGregor's cross for creating the finish. The late goal capped an afternoon in which the visitors used their bench, with Brooks, Lyndon Kane and Joe Thomson among those introduced after the interval.
