Cole Palmer agrees improved Chelsea contract running to 2034
Cole Palmer has signed an improved Chelsea contract lasting until 2034, extending an agreement that already ran to 2033, according to BBC Sport. The 24-year-old England international is being rewarded for his contribution to Chelsea's attack, with the report also describing his growing influence as a leader within the dressing room.
Watch the highlights:
The extension comes two years after Palmer signed his previous deal and follows his £42.5m transfer from Manchester City in 2023. BBC Sport reports that the new expiry date puts him alongside City's Erling Haaland and Chelsea team-mates Joao Pedro and Geovany Quenda, who also have contracts running to 2034. Those agreements are among the longest currently in the Premier League.
Palmer's renewal continues a sequence of Chelsea contract extensions intended to reward players while preserving the club's wage structure. Joao Pedro agreed a deal through 2034 in August, while Pedro Neto signed a six-year contract last month. Palmer has also developed an effective partnership with Joao Pedro and renewed his on-field understanding with Morgan Rogers during the opening stages of Xabi Alonso's time as manager.
His performances this season have produced four goals and two assists across seven matches. That follows a campaign affected by a persistent groin problem, which Palmer acknowledged he continued playing through when he probably should not have. BBC Sport reports that he sought specialist advice about whether an operation was necessary, and that his limited availability ultimately contributed to his exclusion from England's World Cup squad over the summer.
Despite playing more minutes than any other Chelsea player this season, Palmer missed England's latest international break. England manager Thomas Tuchel expressed frustration at the opportunities Palmer had missed. Alonso, however, maintained that the player remains committed to representing his country and stressed that he needs to be fully fit to contribute for both club and national team.
Alonso said Palmer had trained during the past week and was feeling better, but Chelsea had avoided rushing him. The manager expects him to be available against Bournemouth on Saturday, rather than confirming his participation. Chelsea enter that fixture in 10th place after five league matches, having conceded 12 goals, with Palmer's new agreement settled as attention returns to the club's domestic campaign.
