Cole Geyer's Late Double Seals Huddersfield Upset of Leigh

Cole Geyer scored two second-half tries as Huddersfield Giants defeated Leigh Leopards 30-18, delaying the visitors' chance to secure a Super League play-off place. BBC Sport reported that the Giants crossed five times and recorded their seventh victory of the season, with five of those wins arriving in their past six matches.

Leigh opened the scoring after nine minutes when Owen Trout gathered an up-and-under and stretched over the line. Huddersfield responded decisively before half-time, producing 14 points in a 10-minute spell. Harry Rushton forced his way over, George Flanagan added a penalty, and Taane Milne scored after Innes Senior spilled Tui Lolohea's high kick.

The Giants led 14-6 at the interval and extended that advantage when Zac Woolford broke from dummy half and supplied Niall Evalds for their third try. Leigh answered through Umyla Hanley, who scored on his 100th Super League appearance after Josh Charnley advanced down the right wing.

Huddersfield restored their cushion after forcing a goal-line drop-out and recovering Leigh's short restart. Woolford then put a grubber kick into the in-goal area for Geyer to touch down. Robbie Mulhern kept Leigh in the contest with a try 11 minutes from time after the visitors reclaimed a restart and quickly broke through the defence.

Any prospect of a late Leigh comeback ended after another handling error gave Huddersfield attacking field position. Geyer found a gap and went over for his second try with six minutes remaining. Flanagan converted all five Huddersfield tries, finishing with five goals as the home side completed a 30-18 victory.

The result moved Huddersfield above York into 12th place before York's trip to Toulouse. Leigh, who had won eight of their previous nine matches, remained fifth with two games left. They are still positioned to make the play-offs, but missed the opportunity to guarantee a top-six finish despite seventh-placed St Helens losing at home to Leeds. Leigh coach Adrian Lam told BBC Radio Manchester that Huddersfield had been physical and accurate, while his side produced its poorest performance in several months.
