Coco Gauff returned to the US Open quarter-finals for the first time since her 2023 title run by defeating fellow American Iva Jovic 6-1, 6-4 in the fourth round on Monday night. The WTA reported that the fourth seed completed the victory in one hour and 33 minutes at Arthur Ashe Stadium, advancing to the 12th Grand Slam quarter-final of her career.

The opening game briefly suggested a more complicated contest when Jovic broke Gauff's serve. Gauff responded immediately and swept the next six games to take the first set in under 35 minutes. Gauff now faces fifth seed Mirra Andreeva for a place in the semi-finals. The WTA says Gauff has won all five of their previous meetings, although four were played on clay. Their only earlier hard-court match came at the 2023 US Open, the tournament Gauff won for her first major singles title.

The quarter-final therefore pairs two established contenders with contrasting incentives. Gauff is trying to reclaim the New York title while preserving a 10-match winning run. Andreeva is seeking her first victory in the matchup and arrives after defeating Anastasia Potapova in three sets in the fourth round.

For Jovic, the defeat ends a breakthrough home campaign after she reached the second week at Flushing Meadows. Her run included a three-set win over Alexandra Eala, but Gauff's return pressure proved decisive in the fourth round. The official statistics show Jovic won 44.1 percent of her service points and faced 11 break points across seven service games.

What to watch

Gauff's serve and first-strike control will be central against Andreeva. She faced limited danger against Jovic after the opening game, while her movement and return game repeatedly shortened the American teenager's service holds.
