Coco Gauff highlights pressure on Alexandra Eala after historic 2026 season

Coco Gauff has said Alexandra Eala faces a level of national expectation that the American cannot fully share, following the Filipino player's third-round exit at the US Open. BBC Sport reported that Eala became emotional while discussing the support she receives from the Philippines after her defeat by Iva Jovic.

The result ended Eala's latest Grand Slam run, which began with victories over Mary Stoiana and Oleksandra Oliynykova. Her progress to the third round followed a series of milestones in 2026, and the 21-year-old has climbed to 18th in the world rankings. Gauff, ranked fourth, is due to face Jovic in the fourth round.

Asked about Eala's experience, Gauff drew a distinction between their backgrounds. The 22-year-old said American players have benefited from generations of established sporting figures who opened pathways before them. Eala, by contrast, has been the first Filipino woman to cross several prominent thresholds in professional tennis, placing her achievements under unusually concentrated attention.

Eala became the first Filipino player to win a match in the Open era on her US Open debut last year, according to BBC Sport. This season she also advanced to the fourth round at Wimbledon. Her results have been accompanied by increasingly visible Filipino support at tournaments, with flags and fans becoming a regular presence around her matches.

Her 2026 season also brought significant tour success. Eala captured her second WTA 125 singles trophy in Birmingham in June, then won the Washington Open for her first WTA 500 title and maiden WTA singles championship. After Wimbledon, she was honoured at a reception hosted by Filipino president Ferdinand Marcos at Malacanang Palace in Manila.

Gauff, a two-time Grand Slam champion who has previously partnered Eala in doubles, said she respects what the Filipino is accomplishing. She suggested the point of overlap is the public expectation that a leading player should win every match, but considers Eala's wider burden greater because of her status as a national trailblazer. The assessment places Eala's rapid rise in the context of both her competitive results and the history she continues to make for Philippine tennis.
