Cliff takes four as Yorkshire leave Nottinghamshire 242-9 at Trent Bridge

Ben Cliff took four wickets as Yorkshire restricted Nottinghamshire to 242-9 on the first day of their final County Championship match at Trent Bridge. According to the ECB Reporters' Network report published by BBC Sport, Yorkshire claimed five wickets in the last session, including four in the final 11 overs, to reclaim control after a substantial home recovery.

Cliff finished the day with figures of 4-39 and Ben Coad took 2-42. Nottinghamshire captain Haseeb Hameed made 71, while Jack Haynes contributed 48 in a fourth-wicket partnership worth 108. Their stand lifted the hosts from 64-3, but Yorkshire's late breakthroughs left Nottinghamshire without a batting bonus point at the close. The visitors had collected three points and were yet to bat.

Yorkshire chose to bowl and had to persist through a watchful opening partnership before Coad dismissed Ben Slater, caught at second slip. Ben Martindale then struck three boundaries in one Matthew Revis over as Nottinghamshire reached lunch on 63-1. The afternoon began very differently: Cliff removed Martindale and Joe Clarke with successive deliveries, both caught by Adam Lyth at second slip.

Hameed and Haynes responded by keeping Yorkshire wicketless for more than two hours. Their partnership gave Nottinghamshire a route back into the innings despite conditions that continued to test the batters. Revis eventually broke through when Hameed edged behind, and the hosts reached tea at 176-4. Haynes fell after the interval, hitting Cliff to cover after another spell of scoreless overs.

Lyndon James and Mitchell Hay added 51, Nottinghamshire's second-largest partnership of the day, before the new ball helped Yorkshire make further inroads. Hay was caught behind off Hill, Coad held a return catch to dismiss Liam Patterson-White, and James was caught at wide mid-on to give Cliff his fourth wicket. Jack White then dismissed Brett Hutton in the penultimate over, securing Yorkshire's third bowling bonus point.

The result of the match remained undecided, but the opening day further reduced Nottinghamshire's already slim title prospects. The 2025 champions entered the final round still mathematically able to catch leaders Warwickshire after losing to Sussex at Hove. Yorkshire, meanwhile, were pursuing a third consecutive victory following their win over Somerset at Headingley.
