Cliff takes four as late Yorkshire surge leaves Nottinghamshire 242-9

Ben Cliff took four wickets as Yorkshire reduced Nottinghamshire to 242-9 on the opening day of their County Championship finale at Trent Bridge on Thursday. According to the ECB Reporters' Network report carried by BBC Sport, four wickets fell in the final 11 overs, leaving Yorkshire with three bowling bonus points.

Cliff finished with 4-39 and Ben Coad returned 2-42 after the visitors chose to bowl. Nottinghamshire had recovered from 64-3 through a fourth-wicket stand of 108 between Haseeb Hameed and Jack Haynes, but lost five wickets in the final session as Yorkshire regained control of the innings.

Hameed made 71 before edging Matthew Revis behind, while Haynes fell for 48 after hitting Cliff to cover. Earlier, Cliff had removed Ben Martindale and Joe Clarke with successive deliveries, both caught at second slip by Adam Lyth, to disrupt Nottinghamshire's start to the afternoon.

The late wickets included Mitchell Hay, caught behind off George Hill, and Liam Patterson-White, caught and bowled by Coad. Cliff then dismissed Lyndon James before Jack White had Brett Hutton caught behind in the penultimate over, securing Yorkshire's third bowling point.

Despite that finish, Coad said Yorkshire had hoped to dismiss the hosts more cheaply after winning the toss. Speaking in an interview published on the club's website, he said the attack could have tested the batters' forward defence more consistently. He welcomed the number of maiden overs but felt the bowlers had too often operated with a slightly short length.

Coad also described a change in how the surface played: the ball initially skidded through, while the second new ball offered more assistance late in the day. He praised Cliff's preparation away from matches and his ability on the field, expressing confidence that the younger bowler would continue to develop after another productive performance.

Nottinghamshire's own report said Hameed had occupied the crease for more than four hours. Olly Stone and Mohammad Ali survived to stumps, keeping open the hosts' chance of securing a batting bonus point when their innings resumes.
