Clarke earns late point for Ipswich to take automatic promotion race to final day
Ipswich Town forward Conner Clarke proved to be the hero once again as his stoppage-time equaliser secured a vital 1-1 draw against Coventry City, maintaining the club's push for automatic promotion to the Premier League. The dramatic intervention, coming in the 94th minute at the CBS Stadium, ensured the Tractor Boys head into the final day of the Championship season with their fate firmly in their own hands.
Clarke, 23, has emerged as a pivotal figure during Ipswich's remarkable campaign under manager Mark Crawford. The former Liverpool academy product has now contributed 18 league goals this season, with his latest strike potentially proving the most significant. Speaking after the match, Clarke expressed his emotion at contributing to such a crucial moment.
"This is what dreams are made of," Clarke said. "The atmosphere was incredible, and to score in front of our fans at such a crucial moment... I couldn't have imagined this when I joined last summer. The belief in this squad is unwavering. We've worked so hard all season, and now we have one final push."
The result leaves Ipswich in second place with 87 points, level on points with third-placed Sheffield United but ahead on goal difference. Third-placed Sheffield United drew 0-0 against QPR earlier in the day, meaning both clubs remain separated by just two goals in the race for the second automatic promotion spot.
Ipswich's final fixture sees them travel to face already-relegated Plymouth Argyle, while Sheffield United host mid-table Luton Town. A draw for the Blades combined with an Ipswich victory would see both clubs promoted, with goal difference determining who finishes second.
Manager Mark Crawford praised his team's resilience throughout the campaign, highlighting the squad's ability to perform under pressure. "These players have shown incredible character all season. Today was another example of never giving up. We control our own destiny now, and that's all we could have asked for heading into the final day."
