Ciganda rescues Europe as Solheim Cup opening day ends 4-4

Europe and the United States finished the opening day of the Solheim Cup level at 4-4 after Carlota Ciganda secured a half-point with a 15-foot putt on the final hole. BBC Sport reported that the Spaniard's late intervention at Bernardus Golf Club in the Netherlands denied the Americans an overnight lead.

Ciganda and fellow Spaniard Julia Lopez Ramirez shared their fourball match with Nelly Korda and Lauren Coughlin. An eagle from Ciganda at the 16th had kept Europe's challenge alive before both Americans left potential winning putts short on the final green. Ciganda then completed the recovery in her eighth appearance in the competition.

Earlier, Europe had appeared positioned for a stronger afternoon. According to the Guardian's report, the hosts led in three fourball matches after a morning session that finished 2-2. Captain Anna Nordqvist had left out all four players responsible for Europe's morning points: Maja Stark, Linn Grant, Leona Maguire and Esther Henseleit.

The most striking American recovery came against Charley Hull and Lottie Woad, who were three holes ahead after 11. Yealimi Noh made four birdies in six holes, including one at the 17th after playing from a fairway bunker to five feet despite being unable to see the green. That erased the European advantage, although Noh missed a chance to win the match on the last.

The Guardian reported that music from the spectator village distracted Woad on the final green, with Noh putting against the same backdrop. The shared point was accompanied by an emotional finish for Noh's partner Angel Yin, whose participation had been in serious doubt because of illness.

Elsewhere, Megan Khang and Alison Lee beat Celine Boutier and Nanna Koerstz Madsen 5&3. BBC Sport reported that European newcomers Mimi Rhodes and Nastasia Nadaud defeated Allisen Corpuz and Auston Kim 2&1, giving the hosts a fourball victory alongside their two halved matches.

Eight more points are available across Saturday's foursomes and fourballs before all 12 players on each side contest Sunday's singles. The United States, winners in Virginia in 2024, need 14 points to retain the trophy; Europe require 14½ to take it back.
