Ciganda saves half-point as Europe and USA end Solheim Cup opener tied 4–4

Europe and the United States finished the opening day of the Solheim Cup level at 4–4 after Carlota Ciganda secured a half-point with a par putt on the final hole. Both Friday sessions at Bernardus Golf in the Netherlands ended 2–2, leaving neither team with an overnight advantage.

According to Sky Sports, Ciganda holed from 15 feet to earn a tie alongside Julia Lopez Ramirez against Nelly Korda and Lauren Coughlin. The American pair had recovered from two down with eight holes remaining to take the lead, before Ciganda birdied the 16th and saved par at the last.

Europe also saw Charley Hull and Lottie Woad's three-hole lead with seven to play disappear in a tied fourball against Yealimi Noh and Angel Yin. Mimi Rhodes and Nastasia Nadaud beat Allisen Corpuz and Auston Kim 2&1, while Megan Khang and Alison Lee defeated Celine Boutier and Nanna Koerstz Madsen 5&3. Those results produced one win apiece and two tied matches in the afternoon.

The morning had already brought a milestone for Korda and Corpuz. Golf Channel reported that their 4&3 foursomes victory over Hull and Woad made them the first partnership in Solheim Cup history to reach five wins without a defeat. They lost the opening hole but won three consecutive holes from the sixth through the eighth to take control of the match.

Coughlin and Alison Lee supplied the other American foursomes point, beating Boutier and Madsen 3&2. Europe answered through Esther Henseleit and Leona Maguire, who defeated Andrea Lee and Lindy Duncan by two holes, and the Swedish partnership of Maja Stark and Linn Grant, who overcame Rose Zhang and Jennifer Kupcho 3&2. Each side therefore entered the afternoon with two victories already secured.

Golf Channel noted that the opening foursomes had been shared equally for only the third time in 20 editions. The individual milestone for Korda and Corpuz did not translate into a team lead, with Europe's two winning partnerships balancing the morning scores. The afternoon's results then preserved that equality across all eight completed matches.
