Christian Wade equals Prem try record as Newcastle beat Sale 17-3
Christian Wade moved alongside Chris Ashton at the top of the Prem's all-time try-scoring list as Newcastle Red Bulls defeated Sale Sharks 17-3 at Kingston Park on Friday. BBC Sport reported that Wade's 101st league try helped Newcastle secure their first league victory of the season, with all 17 of the home side's points arriving after half-time.
Watch the highlights:
Wade reached the landmark nine minutes into the second half, finishing on the right after Newcastle had worked the ball across the field. The winger had spent much of the opening period waiting for an opportunity: according to the BBC's match report, almost 30 minutes passed before his first touch. His eventual contribution turned a three-point deficit into a lead Newcastle would retain.
The first half had produced only a George Ford penalty for Sale. Strong winds encouraged both teams to kick, while their defences resisted pressure close to the try line. With attacking openings limited and neither side able to score a try before the interval, Sale went into the break 3-0 ahead. Newcastle therefore had to overturn a narrow advantage before they could claim their breakthrough win.
The decisive attack began after Sale were penalised for handling the ball on the ground. Newcastle chose territory instead of a shot at goal, with Brett Connon kicking towards the corner from 40 metres out. After attacking on the left, the hosts moved possession to Wade on the opposite flank. Josh Hodge converted and subsequently added a penalty following another Sale infringement, extending the score to 10-3.
George McGuigan then supplied Newcastle's second try from a driving maul, giving the home side further breathing room. Hodge converted again to complete the scoring at 17-3. Sale, who had been unbeaten in their previous two league matches, added nothing to Ford's first-half penalty, while Wade finished the evening level with Ashton rather than taking sole possession of the record.
For Newcastle coach Dan McFarland, the result also ended the wait for a league win this campaign. BBC Sport reported that it was only Newcastle's fifth Prem victory across four seasons. The result left Harlequins as the competition's only side still without a win this season.
