Christian Eriksen leaves Wolfsburg to be closer to family in Denmark

Christian Eriksen has left Wolfsburg by mutual consent, ending a contract that had been due to run until June 2027. BBC Sport reported the departure on Wednesday, with the 34-year-old midfielder saying his immediate priority was being close to his family in Denmark. The agreement ends his spell at the German club after a year.

In comments carried by the Bundesliga's official website, Eriksen expressed gratitude that he and Wolfsburg had found an agreed solution. He described a mixed experience at the club, thanked those who had supported him and said he believed Wolfsburg were well placed to pursue a return to the Bundesliga following relegation.

Wolfsburg's managing director for sport, Dieter Hecking, said the club had wanted Eriksen to determine his own future and had accepted his request to end the contract. Hecking also paid tribute to the impression the midfielder had made on colleagues, employees and supporters during his relatively brief time with the team.

The departure comes just over three months after Eriksen collapsed during Denmark's friendly against Ukraine. BBC Sport reported that he has not played since June. He had previously suffered a cardiac arrest during Denmark's European Championship group match against Finland in Copenhagen in 2021. The latest announcement concerns his Wolfsburg contract; it does not announce his retirement from football.

Eriksen joined Wolfsburg as a free agent after leaving Manchester United in 2025. He made 34 appearances for the club and scored three goals, according to the Bundesliga's account. Wolfsburg were relegated to the second tier at the end of his first season, leaving their promotion effort to continue without the experienced playmaker.

When announcing his arrival, Wolfsburg had highlighted his experience and the guidance he could offer younger players alongside captain Max Arnold. Sporting director Sebastian Schindzielorz said the club valued both his ability and his personality after a summer in which it had recruited several promising young players.

Eriksen's career has included spells at Ajax, Tottenham, Inter Milan and Brentford as well as Manchester United. His honours include three Dutch league titles with Ajax, an Italian championship with Inter and both the League Cup and FA Cup with United.
