Chirewa winner lifts Wolves to sixth as Burnley's home wait continues
Tawanda Chirewa scored shortly after coming off the bench as Wolverhampton Wanderers overturned an early deficit to beat Burnley 2-1 at Turf Moor on Friday. The Championship victory lifted Wolves to sixth, according to the EFL's match report, while Burnley were left in 21st place after another home defeat.
Watch the highlights:
Jamie Vardy had given the hosts the lead in the 20th minute, finishing first time after Jacob Bruun Larsen played him through. Wolves' official report described a first half in which Burnley created repeated chances, with Jose Sa also saving from Vardy. The opener was Vardy's first goal for Burnley, but the home side could not extend their advantage.
Fer Lopez equalised in the 39th minute after Kyle Walker lost possession near his own penalty area. Rafiki Said won the ball and Sean Neave supplied Lopez, whose finish went in off the post. According to Wolves, it was their first shot on target, leaving the teams level at halftime despite Burnley's stronger opening spell.
Burnley had another opportunity after the restart when Bruun Larsen shot over, before Gregoire Coudert saved a Lopez free-kick. The decisive moment arrived in the 72nd minute: Mateus Mane intercepted Igor's ball and Chirewa took possession, advancing towards the penalty area before shooting past Coudert. Wolves' report identified it as Chirewa's first goal for the club. Tommy Doyle later missed a chance to increase the lead.
The defeat extended Burnley's home league winless sequence to 21 matches. Sky Sports reported that the run comprises 11 defeats and 10 draws since their 2-0 Premier League win over Leeds on October 18 last year. It is the longest current home winless run across England's top four divisions and will now pass the one-year mark.
Burnley manager Nicky Hayen told Sky Sports that individual mistakes had undermined his side's performance, despite their encouraging first half. Wolves counterpart Cesar Peixoto credited his team's mentality and their improvement after difficulties handling the early pressure. The result was Wolves' first win in three games, while the club's own report noted their first victory at Turf Moor in 16 years.
