Chirewa scores off the bench as Wolves beat Burnley 2-1
Wolverhampton Wanderers came from behind to beat Burnley 2-1 at Turf Moor on Friday, with substitute Tawanda Chirewa scoring the winner in the 72nd minute. Jamie Vardy had put the hosts ahead before Fer Lopez equalised, leaving Chirewa to settle the Championship match shortly after coming off the bench.
Watch the highlights:
According to the EFL's match report, Chirewa scored just 21 seconds after his introduction. The result lifted Wolves to sixth in the table and left Burnley in 21st place. Both teams had entered the match looking for a response to disappointing midweek results: Burnley had drawn with Charlton after leading, while Wolves had lost to Bolton.
Burnley's own report described an encouraging opening for the home side. Jose Sa denied Vardy after Largie Ramazani created an early opportunity, but the striker made the breakthrough in the 20th minute. Jacob Bruun Larsen supplied the pass, and Vardy finished past Sa for his first goal for the club. Burnley continued to threaten without adding a second before the interval.
Lopez brought Wolves level in the 39th minute. Wolves' report said Rafiki Said dispossessed Kyle Walker before Sean Neave set up Lopez, whose first-time finish went in off the post. It was the visitors' first attempt on target. Burnley then had another opportunity early in the second half, but Bruun Larsen shot over after receiving a pass from Ramazani.
At the other end, Gregoire Coudert pushed away a Lopez free-kick as Wolves began to create more chances. The decisive move came after Mateus Mane intercepted Igor's pass and the ball reached Chirewa. The substitute advanced towards the penalty area and beat Coudert, who got a hand to the shot but could not keep it out. Wolves identified the strike as Chirewa's first goal for the club.
Tommy Doyle subsequently had an opportunity to extend the advantage, sending his effort wide after a cross from Said. Wolves nevertheless protected their lead to secure the three points. The club's report noted that it was their first victory at Turf Moor in 16 years, while Burnley were left without a reward for Vardy's scoring breakthrough.
